Objective To investigate the mechanical properties of Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) bone cement loaded with different concentration of Vancomycin,as well as the influence of the low frequency ultrasonic(LFUS) on them. Methods Different kinds of specimens were respectively performed and grouped into 5 groups, which were controlled(1), 3%(2), 3%LFUS(3), 5%(4), 5% LFUS (5) according to the different concentration of Vancomycin in wt%, and to whether or not processed by LFUS,. Then the compressive strength, elastic modulus, tensilestrength and bending strength were investigated respectively. All the data was collected and analysed statistically(ANOVA and q-test).Results All the properties investigated here of the cement decreased after loaded with Vacomycin, except the elastic modulus. The bending strength and tensile strength of the cement decreased significantly after loaded with 3%Vancomycin,while the compressive strength till 5%.Even though, they were better than the ISO 5833 standard. But the elastic modulus of the cement didn't show any statistically significant difference even after loaded with 5%Vancomycin.The LFUS showed no influence on those properties above. Conclusion The mechanical properties investigated here are suitable for clinical use at the concentration of 5% in weight or lower.Low frequency ultrasonic has no influence on them.
