Objective: To explore the occurrence of dry-eye in type 2 diabetic patients and the role of several ocular factors in the development of dry eye in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: Four hundred and seventy six cases were selected, which including one hundred and eighty three type 2 diabetes patients, a questionnaire about dry eye was surveyed among these patients. According to the role of one patient with one corresponding control person, eighty one diabetic patients with dry eye and eighty one healthy control persons were coupled. Evaluated with five kinds of ocular examinations including the Schirmer I test (represent the tear basal secretion), the breaking up time test (represent the tear film stability), the fluorescein staining test (represent corneal epithelial integrality), the tear ferning test (represent the tear formation) and conjunctive impression cytology test(respent conjunctival epithelium scale metaplasia) in type 2 diabetic patients and healthy control persons. Chi-square test and association were used to analyze the difference of dry eye between type 2 diabetic patients and other patients and association between diabetes and dry eye was studied, Multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the relation between multivariate ocular factors and the development of dry eye in type 2 diabetic patients. Results: The difference of dry eye between type 2 diabetic patients and other patients have statistical significance(x~2=34.7592, p<0.05), diabeteswas related to the development of dry eye(p<0.05, r=0.2609). The logistic regression analysis displayed that the decrease of basal tear secretion, the unstable tear flilm had positive relationship with the development of dry eye in type 2 diabetic patients(p<0.05). Conclusion: our dates showed that the diabetic patients tend to occur dry eye and the unstable tear flilm and the decrease of basal tear secretion might played a key role in the development of dry eye in type 2 diabetic patients.
