Objective: To survey and analyse the etiology, cause of death and countermeasure of acute renal failure (ARF), the incidence, etiology and mortality of ARF was retrospectively investigated. Methods: 200 patients with ARF due to different causes from January 1994 to June 2004 in our hospital were enrolled in this study. These patients were defined as three types: pre-renal, renal parenchymal and post renal ARF. The etiology, cause of death and mortality of all types were analyzed. Results: They were 126 males and 74 females with mean age 44.1±17.8 years old( range between 8-89 years old). 52 cases were elder than 60 years old (26%), the patterns of ARF were pre-renal (104, 52%), renal parenchymal (72,34%) and post renal (24,12%). 104 cases with pre-renal ARF, consisted of sepsis, cardio-vascular disease and post-operation ischemia, fluid loss and ekectrolyte acid-base imbalance. 72 cases with renal parenchymal ARF consisted of deterioration of giomerular disease and intoxication (including nephrotoxic drugs), 24 cases with post renal ARF resulted from the urinary tract tumors, stone and prostatic hypertrophy. The total mortality of ARF was 26% while the mortality of pre-renal ARF was 36.5% (38/104). Conclusion: During the last 11 years, there was an increasing trend in the incidence of ARF, especially in the elder cases. The incidence and mortality of pre-renal ARF is high, doctor should grasp the etiology of ARF so that to decrease the mortality of ARF.
