Purpose: To study the results of the enzyme histochemical staining of the extraocular musclesbetween the intermittent strabismic patients and orthophoric people. Methods: Medial rectus muscles from the strabismic patients and orthophoric people were studiedby HE staining and mATPase histochemical staining, also the distribution and ratio of slow fiberand fast fiber were quantitatively studied by light microscopy. Results: No different ratio of the slow fiber and fast fiber was found between intermittentstrabismic patients and orthophoric people. Conclusions: l.The change of the ratio of the slow and fast medical rectus muscle fibers was notthe possible pathogenesis for intermittent strabismus. 2.The optimal acid preincubation pH of thehuman extraocular muscle myofibrillar actomyosin adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase) stainingwas 4.3~4.4,and it seemed certain that it was impossible to differ fiber types after alkalinepreincubation. 3.The ratio of the slow and fast fiber changed along the length of human medialrectus muscle (the slow fibers were decreasing from the insertion towards the belly).
