Objective: To explore the protective effects of atorvastatin (Lipitor) on lung and its possible mechanism during the pulmonary ischemia- reperfusion injury.Material and Methods: Single lung in site ischemia- reperfusion animal model was used. Thirty Wistar rats were randomly divided into three equal groups and 10 rats were in each group. Sham operate group (SO); ischemic-reperfusion group (IR); atorvastatin treat group (AT). Wet to dry weight rate(W/D), lung permeability index( LPI), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, surperoxide dismutase(SOD) activity, myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity in the lung tissue were measured respectively, lung tissue was prepared for light microscopic observation. The expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and surfactant protein A (SP-A) were examined by immunohistochemistry. Results: Set up a single lung in site ischemia- reperfusion model in rat. The levels of LPI , MDA content , MPO activity (P<0.01)and W/D (P<0.01) were significantly decreased in AT group than in IR group, but the activity of SOD was significantly higher in AT group than in IR group. The expression of SP-A (P<0. 01), eNOS (P<0. 01) were significantly higher in AT group than in IR group, but the expression of iNOS (P<0.01) was significantly decreased in AT group than in IR group. Conclusion: The data showed that atorvastatin could ameliorate injury in an experimental model of lung ischemia-reperfusion.
