Objective We aimed to investigate the pathological characteristics of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, and explore it's pathogenesis in guinea pig model induced by myelin basic protein from bovine brain. Methods We established an experimental allergic encephalomyelitis model by extracting myelin basic protein from bovine brain and injecting it with complete Freund's adjuvant in female guinea pigs hypodermically on back. Brain, spinal cord and sciatic nerve of guinea pigs were dissected, and the pathological changes were observed histopathologically and immunopathologically. Results We successfully established an experimental allergic encephalomyelitis model with myelin basic protein in complete Freund's adjuvant. The neurological manifestations were paralysis in limbs and weight loss, but animals in control group did not show abnormalities. The pathological characteristics are as follows : 1. perivascular cuffs of inflammatory cells infiltrates, especially around the small venules in cerebral parenchyma, spinal cord and subarachnoid cavity; 2. disintegration and disappearance of myelin shealth in white matter of lateral ventricle and in lateral horn as well as posterior commissure of spinal cord; 3. well preserved axon in brain and spinal cord; 4. a chronological changes of astrocytosis...
