Objective: To reveal the mechanism of treating depression with acupuncture and explore the physiopathology mechanisms of depression .Methods: Forty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups of 7 each .All rats except the control group singly housed and exposed chronically 21 days to a variety of moderate unpredictable stressors to form rat model of depression .Use open-field test to observe depressive rat's behavioral change; use biochemical method to observe the effect of acupuncture on hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical axis of depressive rats. And the curative effects with different acupuncture therapy methods were compared.Result: acupuncture can improve abnormal behavior of depressive rats ; acupuncture can diminish HPA axis responsivity of depressive rats. Acupuncture is a simple and effective method for treating depression.
