PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical features of the low back pain which involved degeneration of lumbar vertebral endplate on MR images (according to Modic classification). METHODS: Two groups were investigated。Group 1 includes 10 low back pain patients who have the degenerative endplate and disc changes in the L4 ,L5 ,S1 on MR images , particularly with the adjacent vertebral bodies changes 。Group 2 includes 10 low back pain patients who have only degenerative disc changes in L4/5 or L5/S1 on MR images 。Such clinical outcome was focused on, for example whether sustained pain or not and whether aggravation while standing and walking or not. RESULTS: Of the 10 patients with degenerative endplate changes, 8 patients complained about sustained pain and 7 patients complained about aggravation while standing and walking , on the contrary, the number in other group is 3 and 2 respectively。CONCLUSION: The degenerative endplate changes on MR images should not be neglected。This kind of patients usually suffers from sustained pain and aggravated while standing and walking.
