Objective: To explore the abnormality of brain electric activities and the possible psychopathology of schizophrenia by the Brain Electric Activity Mapping and Brain Evoked Potential N100, P300。Subjects and Methods: Study group, 48 patents with schizophrenia at 34 yearsold on average (20 males and 28 females), and control group, 46 normal volunteers at35 years old on average (22 males and 24 females) were included in the study All thesubjects in both the study group and the control group were measured with the BrainElectrical Activity Mapping (BEAM) apparatus, the Brain Evoked Potential (BEP)apparatus, and related Information Collection Questionnaire (ICQ). The data wasanalyzed with SPSS 11.5 including independent-samples T-test, paired-samples T-test.Results: The brain electrical activities reduced in schizophrenics in general, including both α1 and α2 waves. Our results showed that five a wave bands of studygroup had lower powers ir left temporal regions(p<0.05). The δ and β2 wave bandshad relatively higher power (p<0.05), including 7 δs and 2 βs in the frontal.temporal or apical lobes. Among all the above significant power values, 78.57%(11/14) located in the left hemisphere, which indicated that the abnormalitiesusually occurred in the left hemisphere and the brain electrical activities abnormalasymmetry. Paired-samples T-test on the study group showed that 36 pairs among 48had lower powers on the left hemisphere than that on the right hemisphere and 12with significance (P<0.05). The reduced brain electrical activities was also related tothe times of hospitalization and the age. The amplitude of P3 and the difference of Nland P3 in auditory evoked potential (AEP) were significantly lower in the study group. Conclusion: The brain electrical activities reduce in schizophrenics in general, the abnormalities usually locate in the left hemisphere, which indicate the abnormalasymmetry. The features of BEAM abnormalities in the posterior districts of left temporal lobe may be have pathological significance for schizophrenia.
