Scorpion is the dry matter of Buthus martensii Karsch, and belongs to one of the common medicinal materials. In this dissertation, using the contents of extracts, soluble proteins, amino acids, chitins, elements, total ashes, fats, and ultra-violet spectrum scanning of water extracts and ethanol extracts as indexes, the effect of sex, breeding way, scorpion age and processing method on quality of medicinal material scorpion were studied relative systemically. The results were in followings: The contents of water extracts, soluble proteins, most amino acids, chitins, many kinds of elements in male scorpion were higher than that of in female scorpion, so the quality of medicinal material male scorpion is better than that of female, which is coincident with the point of "Scragged scorpion always better" in ancient document. Along with the increase of scorpion age, the weight and dry weight of mature scorpions increased. While the contents of extracts, proteins, amino acids, ashes etc. in immature scorpions were higher than that of in mature ones. Considering the quantity and total production of medicinal material, it is most suitable to catch scorpions when they are just matured or nearly matured. The effect of breeding way and processing method on the above indexes showed no obvious rule. From the study, it showed that the quality of medicinal material scorpion is the best under the ecological breeding way, and killed in boiling water rapidly, then dried at temperature 80C.
