Deep brain stimulation of subthalamic sucleus (STN DBS) is a safe and effective treatment for patients with mid or late stage Parkinson' s disease (PD). We conducted a study of the 40 consecutive patients whom we treated with stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus from January 2000 to March 2005. Patients were assessed with levodopa (on medication) and without levodopa (off medication) and no control and control, with use of the Unified Parkinson' s Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS). As compared with no control, the patients' scores for motor function while off medication improved and those for activities of daily living improved.
