Purpose: To explore the safety of liposuction by reviewing the research process of effects of liposuction on lipid metabolism. Methods: A MEDLINE search of the English literature from 1995 to 2004 and Chinese literature from 2000 to 2004 in CNKI on lipectomy and lipids. All literature on lipectomy and lipids except review articles. 16 articles retrieved, 14 accepted and 2 review articles excluded. 14 trials including 281 objects aimed at evaluating the changes of lipid metabolism after liposuction. Conclusions: Changes appear in lipid metabolism after liposuction, but it isn't certain about the changing time and its influences on body health. So many factors are related to lipid metabolism and more should be studied to evaluate the safety of liposuction. Longer period's observation than 1 year should be taken.
