Objective: To analyze the value of ultrasound, CT and MR assessment in diagnosis of schwannoma in maxillofacial and neck regions. Methods: 28 cases of schwannoma in maxillofacial and neck regions in 2nd affiliatedhospital of Zhejiang University from 1994 to 2004 were collected. All cases wereproved by operation and pathology. 26 cases had ultrasound examination, 16 caseshad CT examination, 20 cases had MR examination before operation. The parameters"shape" , "boundary" , "internal echoes" , "distribution of internal echoes" ,"blood signal" were employed to depict the ultrasonic image. The parameters"shape" , "boundary" , "density" , "distribution of density" and "enhancedscan" were employed to depict the CT manifestation. The parameters "shape" ,"boundary", "T1WI signal", "T2WI signal", "distribution of signal" and "enhancedscan" were employed to depict the MR manifestation. The information of location, shape, envelope, character and relationship with nearby tissue and organ of the tumorwere noted according to the operation record. Pathological records and slices werereviewed. Ultrasound, CT and MR's capabi1ity of detecting the tumor were calculated.Relationship of the parameters and the pathological character were analyzed.Results:1 The characters of ultrasound, CT and MR manifestation reflect the pathological character.2 The imaging manifestation should be differentiated to lymph node, branchial cyst, pleomorphic adenoma, carotid body tumor.3 The accurate rale of ultrasound, CT and MR in estimating tumor character are 34.6%, 56. 2% and 65. 0%.4 The accurate rate of ultrasound, CT and MR in locating tumor are 93.2%, 100% and 100%.5 The accurate rate of ultrasound, CT and MR in estimating relationship with nearby tissue and organ of the tumor are 50%, 100% and 100%.Conclusion: The pathological character of schwannoma can result in the charactersof ultrasound, CT, MR manifestation. MR is better than ultrasound and CT in estimating the tumor character. MR and CT are better than ultrasound in estimating the relationship with nearby tissue and organ. Ultrasound, CT and MR can well locate tumor. The imaging manifestation should be differentiated to lymph node, branchial cyst, pleomorphic adenoma, carotid body tumor.
