ObjectiveTo evaluate effects of chitosan membrane on nonpenetrating filtrating surgery (NPFS) in rabbits.MethodsChitosan membrane extracted from shell of snow-crab was made. New Zealand albino rabbits were 22 cases (44 eyes) were divided randomly into 2 groups, and 22 eyes were used in group A and B respectively. The NPFS was performed in group A and B. Chitosan implant was used in group A . Clinical observation was performed including wound healing, inflammatory reaction, filtering and IOP. Pathological examination were taken from two eyes each group at 1,2,4,12,20,28,36,40 and 48 weeks, respectively.Results1 clinical observation: The rate of good conjunctival filtering bubble was 100% in group A and 81.25% in group B at 10wk after surgery. No obvious side effects were noticed in group A and B (P>0.05 )。 There were obvious different effects at 12wk and 20wk after surgery( P<0.01 )。 At 24wk after surgery, The rate of good conjunctival filtering bubble was 75% in group A ,but diminished in group B Good conjunctival filtering bubble diminished in group A at 32wk after surgery2 intraocular pressure: During experiment, no obvious side effects were noticed in group A and B before surgery (P >0.05 ) .But there were obvious different effects at different time points in each group and between group A and B(P<0.01), IOP was (13.18±0.90) mmHg in group A and (15.65 ± 1.05) mmHg in group B ( P <0.01 ) at 48wk after surgery.3 ultrasound biomicroscopy :UBM examination showed that the operating space was noticed in group A and B after surgery. At 36 weeks, Partial fracture and absorption of chitosan implant was noticed and the space was small in group B.
