[Objective]:The purpose of this study was to construct the three-dimensional finite element model (FEM)of bilateral mandible distraction osteogenesis, explore the biomechanical effects of the orientation of distractors on the distractors-bone interface.[Materials and Methods]: The FEM of bilateral mandible distraction osteogenesis was established by using CT scanning, computer image processing and Super SAP 93 software. To simulate the orientation of distractors either parallel to the body of the mandible or parallel to the axis of distraction, the mandible was lengthened 5mm,10mm,15mm,20mm,analyze displacement and stress distribution on the distractors-bone interface.[Results]: Distractors oriented parallel to the boby of the mandible caused an increase of displacement and stress.[Conclusions]: The study revealed that the distractors should be placed parallel to the axis of distraction.
