Nowdays coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG) is used widespreadly, but the rate of late stenosis is still about 30-40%. The reasons involve in many agents. How to prevent the transplanted blood vessel from stenosis has become the focus of research in vascular surgery and cardiac surgery. Objective Our study is to evaluate the effects of beta rays on the nitric oxide synthase in smooth muscle cell of vessel anastomosis. The area of intima and medial and NOS on VSMC were evaluated. Methods The animals were divided into control group and 32P group. Anastomosis were performed on common carotid artery in 16 New Zealand rabbits, The materials were harvested on 28d after operation. The artery were investigated by histomorphometrical and immunohistochemical approach. : The expressions of iNOS and eNOS on VSMC were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The area of intima and medial were calculated from sections stained with HE by computer image analysis. All values are expressed as mean+S. Statistical significance (p<0.05) was established using by SPSS 10.0 software. Results (1) 28d after operation , eNOS was not expressed and iNOS was expressed in local vessel in groups. In 32P group the positive expression rates of iNOS (45.8%) was much lower than that in control group (79.2%), which showed statistical significance (x2=5.69, P<0.05). (2) the thickness of intima in 32P group significantly decreased compared with control group (13.2 +1.5um vs 17.2+1.7um t=4.932, P<0.01), in 32P group the thickness of media markedly decreased compared with that in control group (235.9 + 19.0um vs 284.3 +45.2um, t=2.788, P<0.05) .Conclusions iNOS plays an important role in development ofpathological of artery anastomosis. Beta rays can influence the produce of iNOS, and notably restrained intimal and medial hyperplasia, thus adjust the healing process of vascular, so beta rays may be used on the clinic to prevent the stenosis after artery anastomosis.
