Percutane vertebroplasty (PVP) is a minimal invasive treatment with which Polymethyl-methacrylate is injected into the diseased vertebra to relieve pain and/or stabilize the vertebra under image instrument control. It was first used by Galibert to treat vertebral body angioma successfully in 1987. In 1989, Kaemmerlen applied this technique in treatment for spinal metastases, acquired the satisfactory curative effect. With the spread of it, PVP had become one of the regular treatments to vertebra part of body destructiveness pathological in most of the developed countries, while in China, it is new and there are on several hospitals provide this kind treatment. Our hospital successfully used PVP to treat 10 instances of spinal bone metastases. Treatments were operated for 10 patients at 12 vertebral levels by PMMA injection. Among the 10 patients, there were four female and six male with an average age of 54(a range of 34 to 79) who were treated for vertebral lesions at spine levels that corresponded to the back pain. PVP was able to relieve the tumor caused backache; relief rate in 24 hours/1 week is 50%/90% separately; after 6-month regular follow-up visit, 77. 8% of the improvement effect is still stable. Original tune degree of backone and sliing to come off didn't change comparing with that before the operation, no further condensation in the vertebral body incurred, and no spinal cord or the nerve foot got close to paraplegia symptom. The vertebral body is where the different kinds of tumors transfer. Intense pain and bone character damage caused by the vertebra cancer frequently is hard to bear. The backone stability of the patient drops even to repress spinal cord and nerve that destroys the life of patients greatly. Usual treatment to the vertebral body quality the vertebral metastases is palliative radiotherapy, but palliative radiotherapy may relieve the pain by73~75% only after 3 weeks treatments without strengthening the vertebra stability which even lead to fracture because the increase of the weight of the pathological changes vertebra parts of the body so that the nerve meritorous service capacity can not be effectively improved. The other usual treatment is surgical operation which can relieve the pain by 90%, but surgical operation application is so limited that more than two lengths of the vertebral body pathological changes is appropriate for this operation. Besides, the wound after surgical operation wound is serious which may causes many complications unbearable for those late-period tumor patients. Vertebroplasty of metastases is an effective treatment that provides immediate and long-term pain relief and contributes to spinal stabilization. The pain-relief mechanism of PVP includes:⑴The machine of PMMA is fixed the action admittedly. After being injected in the vertebral body, the PMMA solidifies very fast, 4 hours later, into pieces with rigidity over 90% which stabilize the vertebral body to stop the little fracture that arouses pain. ⑵The cells of PMMA poisonous , PMMA's embolism represses the blood vessel and blocks feeding and heating power to kill nerve ending of vertebral body tumor organization by making it lack of blood. ⑶If PMMA taken along with chemotherapy medicines and may contribute to treatment to the tumor. The indications that PVP treats include: ①Severe waist backache causes by vertebral metastasic which cannot be cured by conservative treatment. ②The declination of backone stability causes by vertebral metastases. ③The assistant treatment of palliative radiotherapy and surgical operation. ④It also can apply to those who are not willing to take surgical operation or not suitable to take. The taboo is demonstrated to consist of : ①Patients with poor lung, liver and kidney that can not stand operation. ②Patients with serious obstruction in the blood mechanism come out to cogulate. ③Hospital not qualified to press vertebral body. ④Patients with vertebral body following edge cortex fracture damage and amalgamate nerve injury vertebral body f...
