Objective To evaluate the effect of intraperitoneal chemotherapy for treatment of cases of primary liver cancer(PLC) with metastasis within the abdominal cavity. Methods Intraperitoneal chemotherapy was performed in twenty-five patients with PLC with metastasis within the abdominal cavity. They were given a continuous intraperitoneal perfusion of 5-FU(0.5-0.75g/d ) up to a total dosage 8.0-9.75g during 10-15 days. This was followed by MMC l0mg intraperitoneal perfusion on the final day. A intraperitoneal perfusion of gemcitabine(800-1000mg) was given synchronously in three patients with cholangiocarcinoma. Results Complete response was achieved in 2 patients, partial response in 5, stable disease in 7 and progressive disease in. The total effective rate was 56%. Conclusions Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is an effective method for treatment of the patients with PLC with metastasis within the abdominal cavity.
