OBJECTIVE: To evaluate relationship between the prognosis and the expression of Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and nm 23 in malignancy of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus.METHODS: A retrospective review of 60 cases of nasal and paranasal sinus malignancy from 1998 to 2001 was carried out. The immunohistochemical staining was performed to detect the expression of PCNA and nm 23 in malignancy of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. The relationship was analized between the expression of PCNA, nm 23 and the clinicopathologic parameters, prognosis of tumors. Survival analysis was also implemented.RESULTS: The expression of PCNA and nm 23 have no statistical difference in different T stage and histopathology types of tumors (P>0.05) . All cases were followed up for 18 to 64 months(average 56 months). Of 60 cases, 31 cases died, 25 cases showed regional metastasis and 17 cases recurred after operation. The expression of PCNA increased in recurrent group and metastasis group, and showed a positive relationship with recurrence and metastasis(P<0.05), while the expression of nm 23 decreased in recurrent group and metastasis group , and showed a negative relationship with recurrence and metastasis(P<0.05) . The 1-year , 3-year and 5-year survival were statistically different in different T stage, however has no statistical difference in different histopathology types (P>0.05) . The 1-year , 3-year and 5-year survival according to the expression of PCNA andnm 23 have no statistical difference (P>0.05) .CONCLUSIONS: The expression of PCNA and nm 23 may be considered as a predicor of prognosis of nasal and paranasal sinus malignancy. But have no relationship with T stage and histopathology types . T stage , N stage may predict the prognosis of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus malignancy.
