Objective To investigate the effect of a single intraoperative application of 5-fluorouracil,which may diminish peritendinnus adhesion formation. Methods 20 adult white rabbits underwent complete transection of the middle digit flexor digitrum profundus tendon in zone II .The tendons were immediately repaired, then the synovial sheath and tendon in rabbit right paws was treated with 5-fluorouracil solution for 10 minutes ,normal saline was substituted for 5-fluorouracil in left tendons as control group. 10 animals were sacrificed and the forepaws were observed after 3 weeks of immobilization, and the rest 10 rabbits were dealt with after 5 weeks of immobilization. All the tendons were observed with naked and under a light microscope. The biomechanics of tendons were also measured. Result Gross specimen observation showed tendon healing in the experimental group was better than that of the control group. There was no difference in the tensile strength .The flexor degree of joints was much great than that in the control.Biomechamical tests showed significant difference between the experimental group and control group(p<0.05). The observation showed significant difference between the experimental group and controls (p<0.05) . Conclusion It suggests that 5-Fluorouracil can prevent and reduce the adhesion between tendons.
