Objective :To approach the specific pattern ofclinicopathological features of Bornnann's type IV gastric cancer. Methods :129 patients with Borrmann's type IV gastric cancer treated between 1972 and 2000 were analysed restrospectively. Results: Presenting signs and symptoms of Borrmann's type IV gastric cancer are often nonspecific. The positive rate of gastroscopy in Borrmann's type IV gastric cancer was 74.7%,lower than in other types of gastric cancer. 80.6% (114/129) of the lesions demonstrated poorly differentiation. The median survival is 5.6 months in the patients without resection, which is 17.6 months in the patients with resection(curative and noncurative). The 1,3, 5-year survival rate was 56.4%, 23.1% and 7.6% respectively in the patients with curative operations while 40.8%, 8.2% and 0% in those with noncurative operations. Conclusions :In Borrmann's type IV gastric cancer, early detection and curative resection are crucial to prolongate the patient's survival. Aggressive postoperative chemotherapy is also recommended.
