| Objective To analysis the Heart rate variability (HRV) in elderly patients with Idiopathic Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (IPAF) to evaluate the relationship between the HRV and the development of IPAF in the elders.Methods We analyzed the 24 hour dynamic electrocardiography in 24 elderly patients with IPAF and 24 elders without arrhythmia. HRV data including time domain analysis and frequency domain analysis were analyzed. Time domain analysis included the standard deviation of normal RR intervals (SDNN), the standard deviation of 5 min average normal RR intervals (SDANN), the square root of the mean squared differences between adjacent normal RR intervals (RMSSD) and percentage of differences between adjacent normal RR Intervals exceeding 50 milliseconds (PNN50). Frequency domain analysis included very low frequency (VLF 0.01-0.04 HZ), low frequency (LFO.04~0.15HZ), high frequency (HFO.15~0.40HZ) and LF/HF ratio.Result SDNN, SDANN, RMSSD, PNN50, VLF, LF, HF and LF/HF in IPAF group / control group were (106.30 ?20.80) / (133.65 ?27.13) ms, (93.22 ?19.79) / (117.65 ?22.39) ms, (27.09 ?13.03) / (30.00 ?19.97) ms, (5.41 ?3.12) / (8.41?.00) %, (603.4?51.9) / (808.6?70.5) ms2, (240.2?52.8) / (330.7?31.9 ms2, (120.2?8.2) / (153.6?05.3) ms2 and (3.03?.71)/ (2.02?.75) respectively. All the HRV parameters except LF/HF in IPAF group are reduced. There are significant differences in SDNN o SDANN and LF/HF between the two groups (p<0.05).Conclusion HRV in elderly patients with IPAF is reduced, which indicates that the functional disturbance of autonomic nervous system in heart plays an important role in the development of IPAF in the elderly patients.
