Objectives: Ischemia reperfusion injury after lung transplant!on involves the generation of free radicals .melatonin has been shown to be protective in models of ischemia reperfusion injury in other organs as heart and kidney so on .The purpose of this study was to assess the protective effects of melatonin against ischemia reperfusion injury and to evaluate the ability of melatonin to scavenge free radicals and inhibit neutrphil activation in an experimental model of lung transplantation.Material and Methods rfourty New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into four groups. The rabbits were anesthetied with vein of ear injections, A tracheostomy was performed and a endotracheal tube was placed that permitted ventilation with a ventilator. Lungs were flushed and preserved in LDPG(low-potassium dextran-glucose) solution for 18hours at 4癈.the models of lung ischemia reperfusion were set up. the lungs were flushed by blood 50ml and ventilated in airforl hour, the blood gases (P02 and PC02) were measured after flushed, lung tissue biopsy specimens were obtained for assessment of SOD , MDA , MPO.W/D and histology. Results:the three experimental groups contrast control group : P02 and SOD of the three experimental groups were higher thancontrol group (P<0. 05), PC02 , MDA , MPO W/D and histology were low(P<0.05).Conclusions:This study has been shown to be protective in models ofischemia reperfusion injury by melatonin , the protective effects ofmelatonin is better then GSH.
