Objective Under the condition of the change of hospitalization insurance balance and the increase of hospitalization, the purpose of the study was to use data mining to establish inpatient case mix groups for control of the hospitalization cost. Methods The data used in case mix were extracted from about sixty thousand abstracts of the inpatient medical records from First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Jinan University during 1999-2002. After pretreatment, the data were loaded in SQL2000 server database. We established the case mix of the inpatient using the grouping node selected by decision tree. The standard cost of each group can be used for the cost quality control. The author evaluated the effect of the case mix groups by re-computering the data of First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Jinan University and the others hospital. Results All patients involved were divided into 141 groups. In the sample of First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Jinan University, the method of case mix could explain more than 72.2% of the actual variance. Conclusions Using data mining technique to analyze the data of one hospital's inpatient medical records can establish the inpatient case mix groups of the hospital. Then, the hospitalization cost can be controlled. Using data mining to establish case mix is a practical way in reality.
