Objective: studying the expression and relationship of telomerase activity ,P53 and PCNA in the cancer tissues of 30 esophageal patients by using In Situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for study the worth of them in diagnosis, treatment and prognostic evaluation of esophageal cancer. Methods: Telomerase activity was detected by using In Situ hybridization mRNA of telomerase and use immunohistochemitry to detect P53 ,PCNA. Results: 1. 28 of 30 (93.3%)exhibited telomerase activity in cancer tissues compared with 4/30(13.3%) in adjencet cancer tissues ,0/30 in normal tissues, there is significant difference between them (p<0.001).And found there is significant difference of telomerase activity level in cancer of grade and stage (p<0.05 ).2.The rate of P53 expression is 53.3%{16/30),there is no significant association with tumor grade and stage(P > 0.05).3. The rate of PCNA expression is 93.3%(28/30),PCNA expression and level had a significant association with tumor grade and stage (P<0.05).4.A significant positive relationship was observed between telomerase and PCNA but no significance between P53. conc!usions:The expression and level of telomerase activity and PCNA might be a good sign and helpful in diagnosis, treatment and prognostic evaluation of esophageal cancer .there is a good correlation between telomerase activity and PCNA expression ,so ,the two examined at the same time might be helpful in diagnosis.treatment and prognostic evaluation of esophageal cancer .P53 perhaps play some important role in malignant change progress of esophageal cancer.
