Objective :To evaluate the efficacy of Trenscatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization (TACE) in prevention of recurrence after radical resection for primary liver cancer (PLC).Methods:Between January 1996 and Decmber 1998 ,78 PLC patients were undergone radical resection in the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. After operation,TACE was given in 42 cases (chemoembolization group). Nothing in 36 cases (control group). All patients were followed up over 3 years. Results:In chemoembolization group, the 1- 2- 3-year recurrence rate was 7.14%,14.3% and 21.4% respectively. In control group, the 1- 2-3-year recurrence rate was 25%,33.3% and 44.4% respectively. The difference of recurence rate between the two groups of patients were statistically significant. The survival rate was similar in two groups one year after operation, but notably higher in chemoembolization group than in control group at 3 and 5 years after surgery. Tumor large than 5cm > multiple focu no capsule might be high risk factors of postoperative recurrence. Conclusions: After radical resection of PLC,TACE can signicantlydecrease recurrence rate and increase later survival rate .
