ObjectiveiVascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been identified as an important factor for tumor angiogenesis ,which is essential for the growth, invasion, and metastasis of solid tumors. The aim of our study was to determine the VEGF levels in sera and asctis ,to observe the expression of VEGF in human ovarian neoplasms, and to estimate their clinical significances in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and postoperational surveilance for the patients with ovarian malignant neoplasm .Methods:VEGF levels were determined by enzyme linked immunoabsorbnt assay (ELISA) in 51 serum specimens,9 asctic specimens of patients with ovarian neoplasm. The expressin of VEGF was immunohistochemically evaluated by polyclonal antibody anti-VEGF on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. All of the patients before operation had been performed ultrasound examination and platelet counts. Results:The serum VEGF levels and platelet counts before surgery of patients with ovarian malignant neoplasm were significantly higher than those of patients with ovarian benign neoplasm and central group (P<0.05).The ascitic VEGF level was 636.18+ 341.74pg/ml in patients with ovarian malignant neoplasm. There were significant association among tumor stage, residual lesion, histologic grade with serum VEGF levels before surgery, but no significantassociation with histologic type. The serum VEGF levels before operation of patients with relapse were significantly higher than those with no relapse group. The serum VEGF levels and platelet counts in patients with relapse during follow-up period were gradually elevated.Significant positive correlation was shown between VEGF and platelet counts(r=0.88) in patients with ovarian neopIasm. The expression of VEGF in ovarian malignant neoplasms were higher than those in ovarian benign neoplasm. Conclusions:Serum VEGF might be a new marker for diagnosis, differential diagnosis and postoperational surveilance in patients with ovarian malignant neoplasm. VEGF might be involved in the formation of malignant ascities.Platelet count might have some referal values for diagnosis, differential diagnosis .
