Bruxism ' has been regarded as'a forcible clenching or grinding of the dentition or a combination of both at other times than for physiological function'.Although bruxism is a common and a high incidence-rate disorder which can do harm to the health of the masticatory system and even the total body, its etiology and specific therapy have not been understood up to now. The purpose of this study is to research the relationship between bruxism and canine protection as well as to explore the effect what canine protection will have on the occurrence, development and treatment of bruxism, which help us discuss the curative effect of cuspid occlusal splint. This study included three parts as follows:Part one: A Study of the Characters of Occlusal Attrition in Patients with BruxismObjective The specific aim of study was to determine the severity and location of occlusal attrition, which help us analyse the related factors and characters of bruxing. Methods The severity and location of occlusal attrition in 64 patients with bruxism were assessed according to questionnaires, clinical examinations and dental casts. The attrition scores were compared among different dental positions and among different segment arches.Result Attrition scores had no significant difference between left * teeth and right teeth; The scores of some teeth with the same name between upper and lower dental arches differed significantly; The attrition of canines was most severe compared with those of others; The attrition scores of laterotrusion showed more severe than those of mediotrusion; The middle segment arch wore seriously. Conclusion Bruxing was mostly thought as lateral movement; the attrition of canines was most severe which might promote bruxing.Part two: A Study of the Occlusal Contact of BruxismObjective This study was focused on comparing elusion time, protrusive disclusion time, lateral disclusion time and balanced occlusal contacts in bruxism group with those in control group in order to analyse the relationship between canine protection and bruxism. Methods 23 cases with bruxism and 13 controls had been observed in the intercuspal occlusion position, the canine protection position, the protrusive-retrusive movement as well as lateral movement. The elusion time, the protrusive disclusion time, the lateral disclusion time and balanced occlusal contacts had been calculated and compared between the two groups.Result The elusion time of bruxism was shorter while the lateral disclusion time was longer than those of the control group and significant differences were shown among them; the protrusive disclusion time had no significant difference between the two groups. Compared with the control group, the incidence rate of the lateral balanced occlusal contacts was higher although the protrusive balanced occlusal contacts showed no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion The presence of the balanced occlusal contacts might be one of the important occlusal factors that related to bruxism.Part three: Invention and Rudimental Application of a New A Type of Bruxism MonitorObjective A new type of monitor of bruxism had been invented in order to evaluate the curative effect of cuspid occlusal splint and stabilization splint, which help us provide theoretical evidence for the thoroughgoing clinical application of the cuspid occlusal splint. Methods1. Invention of a new type of bruxism monitor: The monitor was composed of three sections-splint, sensor and data processor. The sensor on the splint could collect the bruxist data while data processor could dispose, record and transmit the data. The data of initial bruxist time, terminal bruxist time, continued bruxist time, the longest bruxist time , all the bruxist time and the times of bruxism for one evening would be obtained 2. Rudimental application of a new type of bruxism monitor: A cuspid occlusal splint and a stabilization splint had been fabricated for 20 bruxism. The vertical dimension for each splint was 0.5mm lower t...
