The Study Of TongFengNing In The Function Of Treatment Of Acute Gouty Arthritis In Rats

Gout is caused by a defect in metabolism that results in an overproduction of uric acid, or a reduced ability of the kidney to eliminate uric acid The exact cause of the metabolic defect is unknown. The condition may also develop in people with diabetes mellitus, obesity, sickle cell anemia, and kidney disease, or it may follow drug therapy that interferes with uric acid excretion.The gout has four phases, they are: (1) asymptomatic hyperuricemia , (2) acute gouty arthritis, (3) intercritical gout, and (4) chronic tophaceous gout.The characteristic finding of gout is the needle-shaped MSU crystal, which can aggregate to form larger nodular deposits called tophi. In gout, the joint is swollen, warm, and exquisitely tender, and the overlying skin is tense, warm, and dusky red. Fever is not uncommon. Patients usually show a dramatic response to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAlDs) or colchicine. The duration of an episode of gout is usually 5 to 10 days but can be longer. Postinflammatory desquamation and pruritis are characteristic but not always present. Because of the main disadvantage of most anti-gout drugs is side-effect, such as colchicine,NSAIDs, allopurinol, TCM method will be a new way in gouty arthritis therapy.The symptom and character of gouty arthritis is similar as Bizheng of TCM Main Symptoms and Signs: Redness, swelling heat sensation and pain of the joints which is too painful to be touched but relieved by cold inability to move, restlessness and discomfort in the chest, sometimes accompanied with fever and thirst, red tongue with dry and yellow for ,slippery and rapid pulse.Therapeutic Principle: Dispelling Pathogenic heat, removing obstruction in the channels and dispelling pathogenic wind and dampness.The research show that Tongfengning prominently decrease the body- temperature, anti-foot-swelling, poly-uric, decrease sense of pain, no side-effect to liver, kidneys, viscera index, restrain inflammation cell soakage .The effect of Tongfengning is almost the same than indomethacin and Tongfengding.These results showed that Tongfengning has strong anti-gout effect and remarkable effects on the function of restrain inflammation in experimental rats.
