A certain number of diseases have been well controlled or eliminated during past days along with the advancement of science and development of society. However, trauma has not been distinctly reduced, even has increased to some extent because of the increase of many factors leading to injuries. In the past 40 years, trauma has become the fifth common death cause of urban population and fourth common death cause of rural population in China. There are more than 100,000 people dicing from trauma and several million injured annually in China. In the whole world, more than 1,000,000 people die from trauma and several ten million are injured per year.It is the major duty for medical units of all levels of PLA to cure trauma patients especially in wartime. Even in peacetime, trauma and toxicosis are the fourth most common diseases among inpatients in hospitals of all levels and even reach the second most position in a few cities (such as ShenZhen). It becomes very important to analyze the common status of trauma, causes of injuries, trauma classes and injury conditions accordingly. We observed the characteristic of more than 130,000 trauma patients in database of the abstracts of medical records of army hospitals in Lan Zhou and Ji Nan military area, provided by the center of health information of Health Department of the General Logistics Department, by ordering the percentages of different diseases. The ICD-9CM codes of trauma and toxicosis, which were from 800 to 999, were re-classified to 24 diseases. The incidence rates of-5-these diseases were ordered from higher to lower among military and civilian population respectively. 10 of these diseases with highest percentages were demonstrated in this study.According to the order of percentages, most inpatients of trauma suffered from fractures, bums and open injuries. The incidence rate of trauma becomes higher year after year since early 20th century. In China, trauma and toxicosis are the ninth most common diseases in 1957, seventh in 1975 and fourth in 1995. We can be informed from table 4-2 that the 3 most common diseases are intracranial injury (skull fracture excluded), fracture of lower limb and burns. The major causes of this kind of status are the change of social environment, including mechanization of manufacture and modernization of traffic, and the increase of natural disasters, which would increase the chances of injuries, most of which are those 10 listed in table 4-2, for people. Intracranial injury (skull fracture excluded), fracture of lower limb and burns are the most representative ones. The most common trauma among active army are fractures of upper and lower limb, intracranial injury (skull fracture excluded) and contusion of skin as shown in table 4-2. This is relevant to the common task of military staffs.Among 139,652 records of trauma patients gathered in this study, the total amount of records of traffic injury patients is 40806, which is one third of the whole number of trauma records. In China, with the speedy growing of economy, the rapid spread of mechanization and the sharp increase of urban population and vehicles, the death and injuries caused by transport accidents have been occurring more and more often in past 20 years. At present, more than 70,000 people die from transport accidents per year in our country, which takes the first place of the whole world. In 1998, the amount of automobiles has increased to 24.67 times of that in 1979 (from 1827,100 in 1979 to 45077049 in 1998). And the amount of motorcycles has increased to 199.98-6-times (from 125700 to 25137106) at the same time. Among trauma, traffic injuries have become the leading death cause of urban population and young people. We classified the 40806 traffic injury patients to 7 groups according to the causes of injuries defined in ICD-9CM. The injuries caused by motor vehicle traffic accidents are 89.41% of all.In recent years, though more road were built and the road administration was optimized, denseness of population, narrowness of road and...
