Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is one of important haemopoietic growth factors, and it plays an important part in sustaining the counts and functions of granulocyte for people. It's a common phenomenon on clinic that liver cirrhosis patients complicated with granulocytepenia, while its pathogenesis remain unknown clearly. To explore the relationships between liver cirrhosis patients with granulocytepenia and G-CSF in peripheral blood, we analysised plasma G-CSF levels in sera of 30 decompensated cirrhosis patients with normal bone marrow haemopoietic function complicated with granulocytepenia by using enzyme-Linked immune sorbent assay [ELISA], and investigating the expression of peripheral blood G-CSF receptor on the granulocyte by flow cytemetry[FCM] in the meantime. Our study showed that higher Plasma G-CSF levels (289 ?56.30pg/ml, X SD ,n=20) were found in liver cirrhosis patients with granulocytepenia as compared with healthy control subjects (106 + 23.94pg/ml,n=15)and those liver cirrhosis patients with granulocytecounts close to normal level (113 44.85pg/ml, n=8) (P<0.05). Significantly elevated serum G-CSF levels (708?40.28pg/ml, n=10) were also found in liver cirrhosis patients with granulocytepenia when they complicated with acute infection compared to the above no-infection groups (P<0.01), and it declined markedly when the infection was controlled. This study also suggested that the positive percent expression of G-CSF receptor on peripheral blood granulocyte didn't change accordingly between four groups when the plasma G-CSF levels increased abviously in liver cirrhosis patients with gronulocytepenia. The above research results shows: 1. It's a common phenomenon that serum G-CSF levels increase in liver cirrhosis patients with normal bone marrow haemopoietic function complicated with granulocytepenia. 2.Significantly elevated serum G-CSF concentrations can be used an indicator on clinical practice to diagnose liver cirrhosis patients with granulocytepenia complicated with acute infection. 3. The expression levels of G-CSF receptor may also attribute to the pathogenesis of granulocytepenia in liver cirrhosis and it is worth of investigating further.
