Objective: To investigate expression of matrix metalloprotienase-9(MMP-9) and tissue inhibirors of metalloprotienase-l(TIMP-l) in esophageal squamous carcinoma( ESC) and the relationship between the expression and the biological behavior of ESC.Methods:The expression of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 of 86 cases of ESC and that of 42 cases of normal esophageal mucosa were detected by immmunohistochemistry (the method of streptaridin-peroxidase,SP).Results:There were no expression of MMP-9 and TTMP-1 in normal esophageal mucosa of 42 cases.The expressive rate of MMP-9 of ESC was 65. 12 % . The expression of Well -mediate differentiation and poor were 51.06% .and 82.05% (P<0.01); I - II grade and III - IV grade were 42.86% and 80.39% (P<0.01);The expression of lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were 75.81% and 37.50% (P<0.01).The expressive rate of TIMP-1 of ESC was 39.02% . The expression of well-mediate differentiaton and poor were 44.67% and 28.21% (P<0.05); I - II grade and III- IV grade were 54.29% and 25.41% (PO.01); The expression of lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were 22.58% and 75.00% (PO.01).Kaplan-Meier show the survival time of high expression of MMP-9 and lowexpression of TIMP-1 was lower than that of low expression of MMP-9 and high espression of TIMP-1 (PO.05).Conclusion: the expressive rate of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 was closely related to the esophageal squamous carcinoma, the more expression of MMP-9 and lower of TIMP-1 would be poorer differentiation, higher metastasis and lower surival rate.
