Primary liver cancer is one of the most common tumor in our country. Operation is the first-choice method for liver cancer therapy. Transcatheter arterial embotization(TAE) has been introduced in clinic liver cancer therapy for more than ten years, and proved to be a more effective method, but it can not replace operation. A lot of research indicate that tumor's growth and metastasis dependent on angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is related to the vascular growth factors, and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) is the more important one of them. The expression of VEGF and the counting of microvessel density(MVD) in tumor tissues are responsible to tumor's growth > metastasis and prognosis. Ischemia and anoxia are important factors who make the tumor cells secrete VEGF and form microvessels. In this article, we studied the expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues after or without TAE, and discuss the relation between TAE and operation. Objective: To evaluate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and microvessel density(MVD) of patients with primary liver cancer after or withoutTAE, and study the relation between TAE and the effection of operation.Method: The expression of VEGF and CD34 in 45 patients with primary liver cancer , including 27 patients after TAE, were studied retrospectively by using immunohistochemistry.Result: l.The expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues after TAE are 76.92% and 167.23 + 67.39, the expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues without TAE are 30% and 98.81 ?47.31, (p<0.05 ); 2. The expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues after TAE ltime> 2times>, ^3times are 61.54% 158.85 + 69.2K 75% 174.75 +83.54 > 100% 155.8 + 54.38, (P>0.05); 3. theexpression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues whose operation time after TAB =1 month l-2month 3months are 71.43% 153.57 + 70.42 , 83.33% 209.17 + 81.92 > 76.92% 155.23 + 55.14, (P>0.05 ); 4. The expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues after TAB whose size are >5cm> ^5cm are 75% 161.47 + 82.7> 81.82% 165.45 + 50.26, the expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues without TAB whose size are >5cm> =^5cm are 30% 83.7 + 40.03 > 50% 124 + 51.12, (P>0.05 ); 5. According to the differentiation degree, the expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues with high differentiation after TAB and without TAB are 80% 163.67 + 64.28> 37.5% 121.13 + 29.58 (P>0.05) , the expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues with low differentiation after TAB and without TAB are 75% 166.19 + 74.7, 50% 106.59 + 52.76 (P>0.05) .Conclusion: 1. The expression of VEGF and the counting of MVD in tumor tissues aft^r TAB are very higher than tumor tissues without TAB, it indicates that TAB can improve liver cancer's recurrence and metastasis. In clinic, we should make operation as soon as possible if the patients have the opportunity after TAB; 2. Several times TAB can not acquir better therapeutic effect. So, TAB can not replace operation, operation must be made after TAB.
