Purpose: To assess the role and clinical significance of plasma MMP-9 in cerebral infarction by detecting the change of its level in the cerebral infarction patients.Method: Using ELISA to measure the total MMP-9(tMMP-9) and active MMP-9(aMMP-9) levels in plasma of 37 cerebral infarction patients who were observed at two different time points: onset 2-5 days , onset 2 weeks of the disease and 30 health people as control. At the same time, we will analyse the relationship between the five indexes (the area of infarction lesion, the peripheral blood leukocyte counting, clinical neurologic deficit score, with or without hypertension or hypercholestrolemia) and the levels of tMMP-9, aMMP-9 in plasma.Result:1. The levels of tMMP-9 and aMMP-9 at onset 2-5 days are conspicuously higher thanthose at onset 2 weeks (P<0.01) and control group (P<0.01), while there is no significant differences of tMMP-9, aMMP-9 between onset 2 weeks group and the control group (P>0.05).2. There is a positive correlation between the levels of aMMP-9 and tMMP-9 at the onset2-5 days of cerebral infarction(r= 0.607, P<0.01).3. There are positive correlations between the area of infarction lesion and the levels ofplasma tMMP-9, aMMP-9 at onset 2-5 days.4. There are no obvious relationships between the levels of tMMP-9 , aMMP-9 and the clinical neurologic deficit score , peripheral blood leukocyte counting, hypertension or hypercholestrolemia.Conclusion:1.The levels of plasma tMMP-9 and aMMP-9 at onset 2-5 days of cerebral infarction rise conspicuously and decrease to normal levels at onset 2 weeks. These results indicate that MMP-9 maybe involved in the pathologic course in the early stage of cerebral infarction, and the level of MMP-9 is concerned with the clinical course of the disease.2.The levels of plasma tMMP-9 and aMMP-9 at onset 2-5 days can reflect the area of infarction lesion.3.There are no obvious relationships between the plasma tMMP-9 ,aMMP-9 and the peripheral blood leukocyte counting, the clinical neurologic deficit score , hypertension or hypercholestrolemia at onset 2-5 days.
