[Background] In developed countries and developed cities of our country, the senile degenerative valvuar disease has become the most common cause of valve replacement. Not only the incidence of degenerative disease in aortic valvular is highter than that in other valves, but also it has more complications. The pathologic change of degenerative valvular disease is characterized by the calcification of valve leaf. This change initially presents at the base of aortic leaflet in early stage of the degenerative valvular disease and then extends to the valve leaflets. The thin slice in scan and the high specficity tocalcification of spiral CT contributes its higher sensitivity and specificity todetecting the calcification of aortic valve. Although spiral CT is more sensitive and more specific than other means in detecting the calcification, but it cannot provide more information about the structure, the function and the hemodynamics of the heart. So echocardiography is still a useful tool means in diagnosis of this diease. Previous studies on senile degenerative valvular disease are limited in the patients who have with severe calcified valve leaflets and severe malformation and malfunction of the valve. The diagnostic value of transthoracic echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography in early stage of senile generative valvuar disease remains unknown. There is also lack of a comparision study between transthoracic echocardiography(TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in the diagnosis of early stage of senile degenerative valvular disease based on a reliable contrast, pathological examination and spiral CT for example.[Purpose] To evaluate the value of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in detecting the calcification of early senile degenerative valvular disease on the basis of the result of spiral CT.[Methodes] To evaluate the value of transthoracic and transesophagealdetecting the calcification of aortic valve. [Conclusion](D The sensitivity and the accuracy of TEE are higher than that of TTE in the diagnosis of early senile degenerative valvular disease.(2) The combination of both transthoracic and TEE is more sensitive in the diagnosis of senile degenerative valve disease in early stage than either of them.(3) The noncalcific plaque may be the cause of the false positive diagnosis in early stage of senile degenerative valvular disease.
