With the expanding of poplar plantation in our country, China have owned the largest poplar plantation area in the world. However, some plantation were seriously suffered from Saperda populnea L. in recent years.S. populnea L harmed the branches and trunks of poplar. The demaged areas gradually swelled and finally formed a gall, which could impede the normal nutrient transport, and even cause the branches to dry or the death of whole plant. Our forestry is suffering huge economic loss just because the damage of S. populnea L. In this research volatile matter in the branches of poplars at at different grow season or at different resistive level respectively were extracted by using steam distillation and SilcoCsn Methods.. Those branches were from P. pseudo-simonii Kitag. xP. nigra L,P. nigra L.,P.stalinetz Jabl.,P. deltoides MarshxP simonii Carr,P. simonii Carr. x P. nigra L.,P. deltoides Marsh×P. cathayana Rehd.,P. deltoides Marsh×P. suaveolens Fisch.,P.×euramericana'DN113',P. alba L.×P.berolinen.sis Dipp.,P. pseudo-cathayana xP. deltoides Barry'Shan Hai Guan'and P.davidiana DodexP. bolleana Lauche.Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the content in those volatile oil were conducted by GC-MS.The behavioral and olfactory response of Saperda populnea L.to volatile oil obtained from branches in growing season and monomer compounds were tested by Y-tube olfactometer and Electroantennography. The toxicity of six kinds insecticide on Saperda populnea Lwas also tested. Those studies have established the technical fundation for control of Saperda populnea L. with chemical ecological and nuisanceless chemical control methods. Results of GC-MS showed 1,2-cyclohexanedione,2-cyclohexen-1-one and aromatic compounds were the main component of volatile oil.1,2-cyclohexanedione and 2-cyclohexen-1-one were the specific aural component or its derivative of poplar branches, existing in the volatile oil of eleven poplar varities at growing and dormancy period. Volatile oil at dormancy period of poplar branches contained less P-xylene than at growing period.Result of EAG test showed that the olfactory response of male and female S. populnea L. to volatile oil of P. pseudo-simonii Kitag.×P. nigra L.,Populus simonii Carrx P. nigra L.,P. deltoids Marsh×Pcathayana Rehd,P. nigra L. was more intense than that to volatile oil of P.davidiana DodexP.bolleana Lauche,P. alba L.×P.berolinensis Dipp.and Ppseudo-cathayana xP. deltoides Barry'Shan Hai Guan'.The response of this pest to 1 mol·L-1P-xylene was most intensive, then were to 0.1 mol·L-1phenol.Result of Y-tube olfactometer test showed that the volatile oil of P.simonii Carr. x P. nigra L.,P. deltoides MarshxP cathayana Rehd.,P.×euramericana'DN113' P. pseudo-simonii Kitag.×P. nigra L had better attractive effects to male and female S. populnea L, while P.davidiana DodexP. bolleana Lauche exhibited stronger resistant effect.0.1 mol·L-1 P-xylene had better attractive effect to male and female S. populnea L. In the next place,1,2-cyclohexanedione and 2-cyclohexen-1-one also had some attractive effects.Combining the results of GC-MS and bioassay methods,we could speculate that the efficient attractant to S. populnea L. might be a kind of mixture.Different concentrations of aromatic compounds such as 1,2-cyclohexanedione,2-cyclohexen- 1-one, p-xylene, phenylethyl alcohol and phenol were the host odor which have attractive effects.Cypermethrin and avermectin both showed strongly insecticidal effect to S. populnea L. by smearin on body method and smearing on gall method. Virulence of pyrethroid pesticide to S. populnea L. was higher than that of chlorpyrifos(organophosphorus pesticide). chlorbenzuron, diflubenzuron; Cypermethrin was better than fenpropathrin in both effect and stability in the rusults of those two kinds pesticide application methods.
