A total of 10 soil samples were collected from the polluted environment of Shantung Peninsula, and 519 isolates of soil actinomycetes were isolated using starch casein agar medium. The results are as follows:The antibacterial activity of fermentation broth of 519 actinomycetes against several pathogenic bacteria of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa had been finished. of which, 100 and 97 isolates exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. The fungistatic activities of fermentation broth of 519 strains against several plant pathogenic fungi were studied indoors. Among 519 soil actinomycetes, 53 strains showed antifungal activity against five plant pathogens. 25, 26, 26, 31 and 36 were active against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.niveum, Verticillium dahliae, Colletotrichum gloesporioides, Phytophthora capsici Leonian and Botrytis cinerea ,respectively. The results of the spore germination tests and pot plant tests indicated that the fermentation broth of strains 3D2-83,3D3-7,5D3-2,2D2-13,11B2-3,325,307and 278 had remarkable antifungal activity against test plant pathogens. 5D3-2 and 278 have activity against TMV by the tests of curative effect of fermentation broths of strains against TMV in vivo.Based on the phenotypic information, including the morphology, cultural characteristics, physiological and biochemical properties, classification of strains 3D2-83, 3D3-7, 5D3-2, 2D2-13, 11B2-3, 325, 307and 278 were studied. They were primarily proposed as Streptomyces sp.An activity compound was isolated from fermentation products of strain 3D3-7 and identified as Actinomycin Z4.
