Chinese herbs, which is exclusive in our country and made of plants,have aundant natural resources and a long history. They can solve the problem of residues in body and chemical resistance in stock farming. So it is well known that herbs barely do harm to animals. Some of them which contains lots of proteins,vitamins and mineral elements have pharmacodynamic action and nutrition as well.Recently,with the rapid developmet in living standard,people have a larger and larger requirement of milk products. Raising diary cow shows great development and outlook. Though "China's Melamine Milk Crisis" in 2008 has created a very bad impression,it is important and emergent to choose safe and high efficient Chinese herbs additives for improving the lactation of diary cow.We selected seven Chinese herbs among the compound recipes extensively used in human beings to increase the level of milk, which were Cowherb Seed, Astragalus membranaceus, Rhaponticum uniflorum, Clematis armandii, Medulla Tetrapanacis,Taraxacu Mogono and Manis pentadactyia Linnaeus. Juice from the herbs after boiling was extracted. to be used in cell culture.The topic studied dairy cows include experiments in vitro and animal experiments. The topic detected free radicals,antioxidase,antioxidant agent,antioxidative microelement and total antioxidative capability in bovine mammary epithelial cells and milk.The topic also detected the change of milk yield and milk quality. The intension is to investigate the effectsof herbs on Antioxidative activities of bovine mammary gland as well as its mechanism.The results showed as follows:Except for Clematis armandii,all the other herbs can restrict and remove free radicals,reducing the generation of MDA,surpress peroxidatic reaction and reinforcing antioxidative activities of bovine mammary gland.in both animal experiments and experiments in vitro.(P<0.05)All the herbs increased the milk yield significantly(P<0.05)and did not improve milk quality significantly(P>0.05). Clematis armandii only enhanced antioxidant activity in vitro.(P<0.05)In animal experiments,its effect was not significant(P>0.05).The study revealed that Chinese herbs could significantly enhance the antioxidant function of antioxidant system and reduce oxidative damage of mammary tissue. They guaranteed health and normal function of breast in dairy cows,increased the milk yield,provided a new way for the prevention of mammary gland and increase lactating of milk animals.
