Barrage is a line or area between two individuals in one species that delimit their own mycelia when they meet. Barrage formation has often been attributed to the somatic incompatibility system in filamentious fungi. The somatic incompatibility system provides a nonself recognition during the asexual phase of the life cycle in filamentious fungi. It allows the exchange of nuclear and cytoplasmic between compatible pairs while limits it by triggering the programming death of fused hyphae to make a physical compartmentation in incompatible pairs. Barrage test has commonly been used to distinguish the incompatibility groups.Besides what have been mentioned above, some other factors affect the barrage formation .In this paper , the barrage types among some Pleurotus ostreatus strains and sevaral Pleurotus species were investigated and they can be identified into three types: raised aggregate of hyphae(type A), clear zone(type B)and dark line(type D).It was visible in the interaction zones as a raised hyphal mat and much more aerial hyphae than two sides in type A barrage. In type B barrage ,there is an area with fewer or no aerial hyphae where two strains confronted. The prominent character of type D barrage is a dark line due to pigment deposition at the barrage confrontation. The observation by microphone showed there have a gap without hyphae. This three types of barrage's formation among Pleurotus ostreatus pairs differs to the current cognize of somatic incompatibility .We found only the dark line barrage (type D)among all the types can be explained by somatic incompatibility phenomenon through microscopic observation. There is a gap at the area of confrontation because of hyphal compartmentation and cell death, and the pigment deposition followed this gap.The relationship map got by cluster analysis is different from the result of RAPD analysis. The strains that have no difference through RAPD own different barrage types through the barrage test with the others, while this phenomenon can not be explained through somatic incompatibility. All the results indicated that the phenotypes of somatic incompatibility and barrages have no common in Pleurotus ostreatus.
