Under the field condition we selected the barren-tolerant cultivars from the widely cultured hybrid maize in Guizhou province. Also we compared the differences of barren-tolerant and barren-sensitive cultivars as well as related barren-tolerant mechanism.The preliminary results were described as follows.1. In all the tested varieties, Zunyu 8, Nongda 108 ,Qiandan 16 and Denhai 3, the four of them, had better performance under nutrient-deficient condition and showed strong adaptability to low fertility paralleling with high fertility, which are suitable for extension in the land of different fertility in the central part of Guizhou province.2. Compared with the varieties with poor performance, the good one takes advantages in growth vigor and has strong adoptability, which lays a foundation for high yield. When planting in low fertility land, the root system volume, root weight, root number and fresh weight of over ground part, these four characters are tightly relative to the yield of maize. In the period of seedling, flare opening, spinning and mature, the varieties of high yield mainly hold better performance than that of low yield, which is especially typical in spinning period, and in this period the four physiological indicators are strongly correlated with yield. This paper analyzes that these four characteristics have positive correlation with yield, and probably have correlation with tolerance to barren in maize.
