At present and future, development of processing potato cultivars is the main target of potatobreeding in china. When parents are chosen and cross evaluations are made, not only should highyield and disease resistance be given high priority, but also the traits regarding to processing. Potatocultivar Atlantic, with more supper quality characteristics, is the dominant one for processing intochips in China. In this experiment, 12 crosses were made using cv. Atlantic as female and other t2culivars (clones) with various genetic background and characters as males. The first clonalgeneration was grown in Harbin and Keshan, respectively, in the same design, random completeblock, with 2 replicates. Data were collected for main agronomic traits, yield components, and somequality traits, and analyzed by combined analysis of variance, frequency distribution, comprehensive evaluation of fuzzy mathematics, and constant parent regression to evaluate theperformance of a specific traits or overall performance of a cross, and estimate combing ability andheritability of parents, with an aim of proving new breeding materials for development of potatocultivars. The results are as follows.1. Plant height, tuber yield per hill, tuber number per hill, percentage of marketable tuber yield, and tuber reducing sugar content were subject to crosses and locations. Significant differenceexisted in tuber yield, dry matter content, and reducing sugar content between locations, and highlysignificant difference was found for plant height and percentage of marketable tuber yield betweenlocations. All traits but tuber yield showed high highly significant difference among crosses.2. The crosses Atlantic x D2 and Atlantic x Kexin 16 produced round tubers, particularly theformer, which could also produce round tuber with white flesh and low reducing sugars. Atlantic x, Atlantic x T1800 and Atlantic x Ns 880407 produced tubers with shallow eyes, andAtlantic x T1800 and Atlantic x Ns 880407 also produced some progenies with high specific gravity.Atlantic x was a cross which could also yield white flesh potatoes. Atlantic x T1800 could produce some progenies of low reducing sugars. In addition, cross type, Atlantic xNeo-tuberosum, could generate yield heterosis because of heterozygosity present in its progenies.3. The crosses, Atlantic x D2, Atlantic x Zaodabai, and Atlantic x Ns83-1, were considered tobe the best in their overall performance based on comprehensive evaluation of fuzzy mathematics.4. Additive effect was obvious for marketable tuber number, marketable tuber yield, andspecific gravity. Additive and non-additive effects were both important for tuber number per hilland reducing sugar content. For tuber yield, non-additive effect was dominant. Specific combiningability was high for yield characters of the crosses, Atlantic x D2, Atlantic x Ns880407, Atlantic xNs83-1, and Atlantic×Zaodabai, but specific combining ability was not high of Atlantic xZaodabai and Atlantic x Ns83-1 for processing quality.5. Taken altogether, Atlantic x D2 and Atlantic x Ns880407 are crosses with more goodcharacters, which may be used in breeding for processing cultivars, whereas Atlantic x Zaodabai,Atlantic x Kexin 16, and Atlantic x Ns83-1 are promising for developing cultivars of large tuberand high yield for table. For other crosses, further evaluations are needed. In view of cross type,Atlantic x Neo-tuberosum is more promising for development of processing potato cultivars.
