Eel is one of the most important economical aquaculture species in China. European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), and American eel (Anguilla rostrata) are the mainly cultivated eels.In the past few years,the industry of eel aquaculture has been suffering serious problems linked to the outbreak of bacterial diseases,which resulted in several hundreds of million yuan(RMB)loss yearly. However, seldom efforts have been devoted to the method for rapid diagnosis of pathogenic bacteria from the cultivated eels and cure of those disease.In this study,the effects of a serial of immunologic diagnostic kits and compounds of Chinese herbs and medicine for curing bacterial disease developed by our research group are investigated in different regions of Fujian province.The results are as follows:1.A serial of 33 immunologic diagnostic kits for detecting pathogenic bacteria from the cultivated eels were put into practice in five regions of Fujian province(Nanping,Ningde,Fuzhou,Longyan,Xiamen).There were 7 strains of pathogenic bacteria detected in six European eel farms.Of all these 7 strains of pathogenic bacteria,there were 4 strains detected in more than two regions;There were 8 strains of pathogenic bacteria detected in four Japanese eel farms.Of all these 8 strains of pathogenic bacteria,there were 5 strains detected in more than two regions.Only one pathogenic bacterium had been detected in both Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica.It showed that the pathogenic bacteria of these two cultivated eels were distinct.2.The susceptibility of 24 strains of pathogenic bacteria from the livers of eels to seven western medicines and four Chinese herbs was investigated.The results showed that of all these 24 pathogens,the percentages of susceptibility to Gentamycin,Oxytetracycline,Ofloxacin,Enrofloxacin,Florfenicol,Doxycycline and Rifampicin were 100%,91.7%,83.3%,75%,66.7%,54.2% and 25% respectively;the percentages of susceptibility to Coptis chinensis F.,Scutellaria baicalensis G.,Pheum officinale B. and Phellodendron anurense R. were 87.5%,83.3%,75% and 8.3% respectively.There were 7 compounds showing synergism or addition effects on 7 strains of pathogenic bacteria in florfenicol combined with Oxytetracycline. There were 34 compounds showing synergism or addition effects on 15 strains of pathogenic bacteria in florfenicol combined with the four Chinese herbs.3.The susceptibility of 9 strains of the main pathogenic bacteria to three Chinese herbs was investigated.The results showed that there were 9,4 and 2 strains of pathogenic bacteria which were susceptible to Rhus chinensis M.,Euphorbiia humifusa W. and Sophora flavescens A. respectively.There were 9 compounds showing synergism or addition effects on 5 strains of pathogenic bacteria in florfenicol combined with the three Chinese herbs.4.According to the above medicine sensitivity test and spot detective results,compounds of Chinese herbs and medicine for prevent and cure diseases of the main pathogenic bacteria were studied in six eel farms.The results showed that daily food consumption of those eels feeding with the compounds increased significantly.
