Water plays an important role in production and lives of human. But affected by human activities, water pollution is getting more and more serious. Especially in the last twenty years, large scale, intensive animal husbandry developed rapidly, which on the one hand satisfied human needs, but on the other hand also brought a big environmental problem, such as water pollution. In this paper the quality of shallow groundwater in Huangxu town of Zhenjiang city was investigated in order to find out how much the chicken production contributed to water pollution under the pattern of "company + farmer".At first, we investigated the external factors and the main pollutants that affected the water quality by selective examination of wells in breeding chicken farm. The results indicated that when evaluated by the national standard of living and drinking water standard (GB5749-2005), chloride was eligible with an average of 41.39mg/L that much lower than 250mg/L prescripted in the standard; the average of pH was 6.97 changing from 6.02 to 8.74 with a 88.5% eligibility rate; ammonia nitrogen has a poor eligibility rate of just 29.6%; there was a 99.0% eligibility rate of water rigidity that lower than 450mg/L(GB5749-2005) and the average was 210.1mg/L; the whole eligibility rate of these four indexes was 27.9%. There was positive correlation between the chloride of the well water and the pool water close to the well and the correlation coefficient was 0.65; the pool chloride concentration raised with the well chloride evaluation, but often lowed the well. There was a linear correlation between the rigidity and the chloride in the well water, and the coefficient was 0.59. The landform influenced the content of all ingredients in the well water very much, in montanic areas the rigidity was very high, while in hillock the well water COD was much more high.Secondly, the water quality of two wells, two sluice pools and two sewage pools in breeding chicken farm were monitored in 12/2004, 01/2005, 04/2005, 07/2005, 08/2005, 11/2005 and 04/2006, respectively. Ammonia nitrogen was much affected by the alteration of the season in both wells and sluice pools. 1# well and 1# sluice pool gave a flood tide value in July when there is more rainfall, and their values were 0.55 and 1.69mg/L. COD in...
