Rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa) is a famous ornamental flower in China and has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. It has a broad prospect for landscape application not only for their fragrance and beauty but also for their resistance to cold and drought. However, the number of R.rugosa resources is fast disappearing and there have been no systemtic studies on classification of R.rugosa cultivars. Based on the systematic investigation of the existing species and cultivars of R.rugosa in China in detail, palynology, numerical taxonomy and molecular biology are used to analyze the relationship of cultivar resources of R.rugosa and a new classification system of Chinese rugosa rose is put forward. The main results were as follows:â’ˆAccording to the investigation, the author concluded that R.rugosa resources are mainly distributed in the sand beach of Jilin and Liaoning provinces in China, and the number of R.rugosa resources is fast disappearing in these natural distributions.â’‰Based on thorough investigation and research in main planted area of China, the R.rugosa cultivars are studied by the comparative morphology and 37 cultivars are found. All of them are found in Shandong province,Gansu province and Beijing area. Among these cultivars, R.rugosa'Zi Zhi',R. rugosa'Jin Xin Fen Rui',R.rugosa'Jin Yi Yu Rui',R.rugosa'Feng Hua',R.rugosa'Hongyan Xiangkong',R.rugosa'Yanyang Hong',R.rugosa'Zi Duan'have high ornamental value.â’ŠPollen morphology of 37 R.rugosa cultivars and 5 rosebush cultivars in China is examined under scanning electron microscope(SEM).The normal pollen grains are varied from prolate to perprolate in shape. The number of apertures are 3 which belonged to the colp-orate type and the extine ornamentation can be divided into three groups:foveolate group,striate-foveolate group and striate-reticulate group. The pollen characteristics of these cultivars are differred in perforate diameters...
