Human herpesvirus8(HHV-8), also called Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is mainly seen in Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS). Previous tudies found that HHV-8is not only the causative agent for the KS, but also for Primary Effusion Lymphoma (PEL) and Muticentric Castleman Disease (MCD). The men who have sex with men (MSM) is one of the major populations for infecting HHV-8. The prevalence of HHV-8infection among MSM has been studied in various populations. However, the findings were significantly herterogenous. We first systematically reviewed the prevalence of HHV-8among MSM by means of meta-analysis, providing reference and assistance for related research in the future. Searching published original articles on the prevalence of HHV-8infection in MSM until10April2013in Pubmed and Embase, sixty nine eligible studies, published during1996-2013, were identified and included in this study. The prevalence of HHV-8antibodies and DNA and its association with HIV status were investigated. The summarized prevalence of HHV-8antibodies and DNA was found to be40%(95%CI:35%-44%) and23%(95%CI:18%-30%), respectively. HIV positives were found more likely to be HHV-8seropositive as compared with HIV-negatives with an odds ratio of4.27(95%CI:3.29-5.54). In addition, study base, KS status, and samples used for HHV-8detection might explain some of the inconsistencies observed between studies. Our results suggested that significant efforts are needed to increase awareness of HHV-8and KS in this high-risk population.A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the HHV-8infection status among MSM in China. The study subjects were enrolled in Beijing and Tianjin through local nongovernment organization. Totally599MSM were recruited and laboratory data were available for them. Questionnaire and blood were collected for the serological test of HHV-8and HIV. HIV and HHV-8sero-prevalence were8.5%(51/599) and50.8%(304/599), respectively. And25MSM were found to be co-infected. Univariate analysis showed that education, whether had sex with women, and the way of anal sex (p <0.05) were significantly associated with HHV-8seropositive. By unconditional univariate logistic regression and further selective logistic regression analysis, only the way of anal sex was found to be associated with the seroprevance of HHV-8. Receptive anal intercourse miht lead to higher risk of HHV-8infection, so safe sexual behaviors (such as using condom, lubricant, etc.) should be helpful to to reduce the infection of HHV-8and to prevent the development of the related diseases. In the present study, the relation between HIV and HHV-8infection was not observed in the study population.
