Subalpine region plays principal role in Natural Forest Protection Project in Western Sichuan, In order to study the spatial pattern characteristics of the Subalpine forest, Daofu Forest Region was chosen for the case study .In this paper, based on widely investigation of the based information in the region, Land-sat satellite images in the summer of 2003a, digital elevation model (DEM) (scale=1: 100000) were accomplished for landscape pattern map of Daofu Forest Region by GIS, and it combined with the principles, methods and index systems of landscape ecology to study, the main conclusions showed as following:(1) According to the classification principles of landscape ecology, the two-grade landscape classification system of the Daofu Forest Region was firstly set up. The first-class-landscape include 10 types, the subclass-landscape include 8 types. Among all the landscape types, meadow was the main component with the biggest area in this region, which taken account for 46% of the total area. Forest types were the second landscape elements, which were mainly composed by Picea. spp Forest, Abies, spp Forest.(2)The landscape spatial pattern of the region was analyzed and assessed by using landscape indices. At the whole landscape level, the values of Shannon-Weaner diversity index (H), evenness(E), dominance index(D), connectivity(C), and the fragmentation(FN)of the Daofu Forest Region were 1.7441, 0.6034, 1.1463, 0.4758, 0.0121 respectively. From the results of them, it indicated that Daofu Forest Region was dominant by minor landscape types, and showed lower in degree of landscape heterogeneity.(3) The patches size distribution of all landscape types was dissymmetry, 37% of total patches were identified as less than 0.3 km~2of area, 43% of patches between 0.3 km~2 and 1.0 km~2, and only 20%of them were larger than. 1.0 km~2. Therefore, whole forest region patches size was belong to middle-large grain structure.(4)The results of patch characteristics showed that the area, perimeter and the number of patches for different landscape types were very uneven.
