The morphologic observation of adult, pupa, larva and egg of Black phenotype mutants of moth and pupa of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (JBM) and wild phenotype Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (JBW) were conducted; The pigmentation processes of pupa of JBM and JBW were observed through digital camera, and these two processes were compared; The main biological characteristics of JBM and JBW were observed and compared through constructing life table, and mating selection of JBM and JBW were investigated by mating experiments; And the metabolizable enzyme activity of JBM and JBW were compared in the end. The results were:The main morphological difference were that the color of squama, median fascia, reniform stigma, orbicular stigma, the part between postmedian fascia and subterminal fascial and terminal hair on forewings, hindwings, terminal hair on hindwings, and the color of skin under squama on obdomen were black, and the color of pupa was also black, and the color of hair on dorsal thorax and obdomen were white. There were no morphologic difference of larva and egg between JBM and JBW.The time interval of the pigmentation of JBM and JBW were nearly the same, both began to pigmentize 30min after moulting, and the body color was stable until 6h after moulting, the pigmentation of obdomen was slower than wing pad. After 6h, JBW was totally brown, and JBM was black, JBW was black only one or two days before emergence.There were difference between JBM and JBW whether in development or in reproduction. The average egg duration and pupa duration of JBM were longer than JBW, and there had very significance level. The average larva duration of JBM was longer than JBW, but there had only significance level. JBM average female adult duration of was longer than JBW, and there had significance level, but there were no difference in male duration. JBM average rate of hatching was a little lower than JBW, and there was no significant difference. JBM were lower than JBW on average rate of mating, average mating time of per female and average egg number of per female, and there had significant difference. From life table, the population of JBM were increased after last generation, but JBM had lower fitness compared to JBW. The results of mating selection experiments showed that JBW was inclined to JBW and JBM was inclined to JBM when mating.The CarE activity of JBM was higher than JBW, JBM CarE activity were 1.29 and 1.26 times as much as JBW respectively under different enzyme units, and there had very significant difference between JBM and JBW. There was significant difference in GST activity, JBM GST activity were 1.10 and 1.07 times as much as JBW respectively under different enzyme units. There was no difference in AchE activity.
