The effects of quercetin and 2-tridecanone on the specific activity of carboxylesterase (CarE), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the tobacco whitefiy, Bemisia tabaci fed on artificial diet with quercetin and 2-tridecanone were investigated. The results showed that the effects of quercetin and 2-tridecanone on carboxylesterase specific activity were dependent on dosage. Treatments with low dosage of quercetin and 2-tridecanone induced high level of CarE specific activity, while treatments with high dosage depressed CarE activity. When tobacco whiteflies were treated with 0.01% (w/v) of quercetin and 2-tridecanone, the specific activities of CarE were 51.09 mOD/(min.fly) and 61.18 mOD/(min.fly), which were 1.233 and 1.480 folds higher than those of the control, respectively. However, the specific activities of CarE were only 36.72 mOD/(min.fly) and 30.80 mOD/(min.fly) when the whiteflies were treated with 1% (w/v) of quercetin and 2-tridecanone, respectively. The CarE activity of whitefiy treated with 0.01% (w/v) quercetin and 2-tridecanone increased continually within 6 hours. The effect of quercetin on glutathione S-transferase specific activity was dependent on dosage and time. Treatments with low dosage (0.01%, w/v) of quercetin induced high level of GSTs specific activity. 30 minutes after treated with 0.005% quercetin, the specific activity of GSTs was 8.454 OD/(mg pro.min), nearly 8.30 times of the control.Low dosage of 2-tridecanone did not affect GSTs activity and only 0.1% (w/v) of 2-tridecanone could greatly induced GSTs activity of tobacco whitefiy. The quercetin and 2-tridecanone had no distinct effect on acetylcholinesterase specific activity of tobacco whitefiy.
