There are many advantages for apple sorting by computer vision and photoelectric technology. Yet the size and defect are the two important index signs in apple's quality automation examine. Herein apple sorting needs to examine not only the apple's max-diameter, but also the defects. Since apple's stem-calyx is very like defect for computer vision and photoelectric sorting system, in order to improve sorting precision, based on the studies of orientation and conveyor mechanisms, and analyzing the feasibility of liquid buoyancy atmosphere press and mechanical orientation, considering other things ,choose the mechanical orientation, design the orientation mechanism and conveyor system, and a proto type of orientation mechanism was made. Experimental results indicated that the orienting time is 0-4s for each apple, orientation precision in 94%, this will meet the request of on-line detection.The system can solve the problem of mistaking apple's stem-calyx to defect, and it is simple to get the max-diameter. It has important meaning for the study of the automatic apple sorting system, which means computer vision and photoelectric technology.
