A direct competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of Chloramphenicol (CAP ) is described. Polyclonal antibodies (PAbs) with high affinity to chloramphenicol were prepared from rabbits immunized with CAP succinate conjugated to protein. The titer of antiserum was 3.2 X105 ,I50 was 12.9 ng/ml. CAP could be quantitated in the range 0.24-678.8 ng/ml. The cross-reactivity of PAbs with seven antibiotics were <0.01%. Average recovery of CAP from milk was 106.56%. The detection limit was 0.24ng/ml. It was below maximum residue limits (MRLs) established by the Peoples Republic of China. This research will be useful for the development of anti-CAP ELISA Kit.
